7 New Year’s Resolutions for primary school teachers

From changing old habits to finding that all important work/life balance, here are our top tips to inspire you this New Year.

1. Work smarter, not harder

Instead of returning to work and falling straight back into the same routine, use your time efficiently and map out each small task so you can make the best use of each day.

2. Stay out of school drama

Stay focused on your class, your plans and what you want to achieve. Try to remain neutral when you are inevitably sucked into the staffroom sagas.

3. Beat those ‘Sunday night blues’

Accept and embrace your Monday mornings. See them as a completely clean slate to build on your teaching strengths — and if needed, you could even set yourself a time frame for actually thinking about school on a Sunday at all.

4. Keep building strong parent relationships

Remember, a parent and teacher relationship should be an equal partnership filled with honesty, transparency and reassurance.

So, step out the classroom, show your face and kick start the conversation.

5. Dress to impress

Start the year as you mean to go on. Plan your outfits in advance, give yourself a little bit of extra time to get ready in the morning and you’ll be guaranteed to look and feel your best.

6. Focus on getting a better work/life balance

Make this the year you ACTUALLY achieve a healthy work/life balance. Put the pen down and start saying yes — to that meal after work, to another Netflix series or to a well-deserved spa trip

…also known as a bubble bath with some tealights!

7. Make time for each pupil

Scheduling time for individual catch-ups with your pupils is close to impossible for any primary school teacher. Instead, you could start letting pupils help you with small classroom tasks. This allows a more natural way of checking in, whilst further strengthening your bond.
